Joel Greenblatt Technique

 Joel Greenblatt is one of the most famous investor in the Wall Street history. His capital management company Gotham Capital earn 40% annually in average for more than two decade. He is considered as value investor, and he is loyal follower of Benjamin Graham philosophy.

He write book "The Little Book That Beats The Market" that share simple technique to earn high yield. He claim that this technique is at least will earn 30% annually. But the trick is you have to be patient for at least 3-4 years, before able to reap the result. 

 

Here are the summary of this book:

1. Mr.Market is crazy guy. He decide market go up or low with no apparent reason. He also irrational that he sell junk at high price yet sell valuable goods at bargain price. Our job it to find out those valuable he sell at bargain price. Mr. Market is stock market.

2. Valuable goods at bargain price has two component: Good business and low price

3. Good business defines as company with high return on capital, or ROIC. 

Formula for ROIC is:  EBIT / (Net Working Capital + Net Fixed Assets)

4. Low price define as company with high earning yield 

Formula for Earning Yield (EY) is: EBIT / Enterprise Value

Thus, our task is to find company with combination of high ROIC and high EY.

In his book, he wrote: "From 1988-2004, owning a portfolio of approximately 30 stocks that had the best combination of a high return on capital and a high earnings yield would have returned approximately 30.8 percent per year.”-- The Little Book That Beats The Market (p. 52)

However, you does not need to search and calculate yourself to find these companies list. He already do it for you in his website: magicformulainvesting.com. Follow below step:

1. Just follow instruction in his website to get the list. You may adjust the filter setting.

2. Pick 5 to 7 companies of your choice out of this list, put in your portfolio and start invest.

3. After 3 months, open the website again and pick another 5 to 7 companies and add to your portfolio.

4. Do step 3 every two to three month. After 1 year, you should have have portfolio of around 30 stocks.

5. At the end of 1 year, sell each stock that you have hold for at least 1 year. And repeat step 2,3&4.

6. Continue for 3-5 years.
